Shopify's cutoff

Script Tag Rescue

See which apps stop working on March 1, 2027, and keep them working.

Review widgets, chat, pop-ups, subscription widgets, loyalty launchers, conversion pixels: whatever still loads through a script tag disappears from the store that day, without a warning from Shopify. Script Tag Rescue tells you exactly which ones, fixes what can be fixed in one click, and keeps the rest running.

One store's scan, before and after.

Script Tag Rescue reads your home page, a product page and a collection page from our server, names every script tag it finds, and gives each one a verdict with the one action it needs. Switch the view to see what each one does on March 1.

  • Starline Reviews

    Review stars on product pages

    Covered

The app's embed is on in your published theme.

Loading twice: the script tag and the embed. Keep the embed.

Loading through the app's own embed.

  • Chatterbox Live Chat

    Chat button on every page

    Turn on the embed

The app's embed is in your theme but switched off.

    Loading through a script tag.

Stopped. The embed was never switched on.

    Open App embeds

  • Unknown vendor d111111abcdef8.cloudfront.net

Probably custom code an agency added

    Rescue it

Not a known app, so there's no embed to switch on.

Rescued. Waiting: Shopify still loads the original.

    Loading through Script Tag Rescue.

    Rescue this script

  • Bloom Pop-ups

Nothing: the script no longer loads

    Remove

The script's address returns an error, so nothing changes on March 1.

    Not loading.

    Not loading. Nothing changed.

Drawn for this page with sample data, not a screenshot; the app names are made up.
  • Covered

The app's embed is already on in your published theme. Nothing to do, and Script Tag Rescue removes nothing.

  • Turn on the embed

The app has moved to an embed, but it's switched off. One button opens the theme editor's App embeds panel, and the card turns green when you come back.

  • Rescue it

There's no embed to switch on: the app hasn't moved, looks abandoned, or the script is custom. One toggle loads the same script through Script Tag Rescue's own embed, and you see the exact address first.

  • Remove

The script's address no longer answers, so nothing changes on March 1. It's a leftover, shown so you can decide.

Duplicate guard. Running an app's old script tag and its new embed together loads it twice: doubled analytics, doubled widgets. The scan flags it and says which to keep.

The road to the cutoff

  1. 24 August 2026

Storefront deprecation announced to developers. Script tags had been deprecated since 2021; now they end.

  2. 26 August 2026

Script tags stop running on Thank you and Order status pages for non-Plus stores. Plus stores were already cut off in August 2025.

  3. 1 October 2026

Apps can no longer create or update script tags, on every API version. Existing tags keep running.

  4. 1 March 2027

Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefront pages. Any feature that depends on them stops for that store.

Merchants are told almost nothing. Shopify cancelled the install warning it had planned, and has no way to switch on replacement app embeds for them.

433 of 735

live Shopify storefronts we scanned in October 2026 still loaded at least one app through a script tag. That's 58.9%, and almost a quarter loaded three or more.

The stores were ones their owners had posted in the Shopify Community, so they lean small and recent. Script tags can be read from outside: Shopify lists their addresses in every storefront's page head.

What happens after you install

One permission, read themes, so it can see which app embeds are switched on. No customer data, products or orders.

  1. installAsks for read_themes only, and starts the first scan.
  2. scanHome, one product, one collection. Password-protected stores work too.
  3. themeReads the published theme's settings: which embeds are there, which are switched off.
  4. verdictOne card per script: covered, turn on the embed, rescue it, or remove.
  5. watchRe-checks on a schedule, daily on paid plans, and after a theme is published.
  6. alertSomething stopped loading? You hear about it, in the app and by email on paid plans.

What it touches, and what it doesn't.

Script Tag Rescue does

  • Read your storefront pages from our server, as any visitor could
  • Read your published theme's settings, to see which embeds are on
  • Add one app embed, which loads only the scripts you chose, from a list kept in the app's own settings
  • Tell you when something stops loading

It never

  • Call our server from your storefront. Page views never reach us.
  • Edit your theme files, or removes anything
  • Load a script you didn't choose, or load one twice
  • Read customer data, products or orders

Questions

What exactly happens on March 1, 2027?

Shopify stops injecting script tags into storefront pages. Any app feature that still depends on one stops for that store: review widgets, chat, pop-ups, subscription widgets, loyalty launchers, affiliate and conversion pixels. Since October 1, 2026 apps can no longer create or update script tags; the ones already there keep running until the cutoff.

Won't my apps fix this themselves?

Many will ship an app embed, the replacement Shopify recommends. But an app embed is off until you switch it on in the theme editor, theme by theme, and Shopify has no way to switch it on for you. Apps that are abandoned, custom scripts an agency added, and vendors who don't migrate in time simply stop.

Does it edit my theme?

No. Script Tag Rescue never writes to your theme files and removes nothing. It reads your published theme's settings to see which app embeds are on. Everything it adds is one app embed, which you can switch off in the theme editor like any other.

Is rescuing another app's script allowed?

Shopify's own guidance for custom code is to move it into the theme, and apps that load code a merchant chooses are already listed. Even so, the rescue toggle ships only once Shopify Partner Support confirms it in writing. Without one, Script Tag Rescue gives you a guided step to move a script into a Custom Liquid block yourself.

Will rescued scripts load twice before March 1?

No. Until the cutoff, the rescue copy sees the original already on the page and stays idle. From March 1 it takes over with no gap. If an app's own embed and its old script tag are both loading, the duplicate guard tells you, and says which to keep.

Can it delete script tags other apps left behind?

No app can delete another app's script tags. Script Tag Rescue shows you which ones no longer load at all, so you know they're leftovers and that nothing changes when they go.

What if I uninstall it?

Its embed goes with it, so any script you rescued stops loading. The app warns you before you uninstall. When a vendor ships its own embed, Script Tag Rescue tells you to switch over and shows you where.

What does it cost?

Pricing will be announced at launch. The plan is for the scan, every verdict, the embed links and the duplicate guard to be free, with paid plans for rescuing scripts and daily watching, billed through Shopify.

What doesn't it cover?

Scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages, which Shopify already stopped running for non-Plus stores on 26 August 2026; Shopify Plus checkout scripts; and moving analytics vendors to a web pixel, which is the vendor's job.
